Operation Get Smart, a program of the SC Department of Corrections, is coming to Greenville County Rec’s Brutontown Community Center on Tuesday, October 8th at 6:00pm. Operation Get Smart lets youth and their parents hear in person from six to ten carefully screened inmates about actions that led to their involvement in crime and the consequences of criminal behavior. The inmates reinforce the same positive values and life skills that parents and educators encourage such as making good decisions based on right and wrong, consequences of making poor choices, being responsible for their own actions, staying away from drugs and alcohol, choosing friends carefully, the difference between positive and negative peer pressure, and more. In addition to the Get Smart program, Master Deputy Natalie Hill will speak on behalf of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Department and various agencies that provide mentoring for youth will be available to meet with participants. “We are trying to establish preventative measures for parents whose kids are on the borderline of making bad choices,” says Brutontown Community Center Director, Joey Freeman. This event is free and open to the general public. Parents are encouraged to accompany their child. Refreshments will be provided. Brutontown Community Center is located at 200 Leo Lewis Street, Greenville, SC 29609. For more information, please call Brutontown Community Center Director, Joey Freeman at 864-233-4669.
